We’re so excited for you as you prepare for your summer at camp in the U.S.! This experience is a chance to work hard, meet amazing people, improve your language skills, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Living and working in another country can also be challenging at times. You might experience homesickness or culture shock — that’s completely normal. In those moments, try to remember why you chose to come to camp in the first place. Give yourself time to adjust and embrace the adventure. Many international staff say their camp experience was one of the most important and rewarding experiences of their lives.
The IENA team is cheering you on and believes you will do an amazing job this summer!
While it’s rare, we want you to understand what happens if someone quits or is dismissed from camp early.
Common reasons staff lose their position
The most common reason staff are dismissed from camp is alcohol or drug-related.
Please remember:
- Do not return to camp under the influence of alcohol.
- The drinking age in the US is 21 years old
- Drug use in the US is illegal and can lead to termination and possible legal consequences.
A small number of staff also quit early due to homesickness. If you feel this way, please talk to your camp leadership or IENA. Many staff who quit early later regret not giving themselves more time to adjust.
If you quit or are dismissed from camp
If you do not complete your camp contract, the following steps will happen:
1. Program agreement
When you joined IENA, you agreed to the program Terms & Conditions which state: “Failure to complete your camp contract, for any reason, may result in the ending of your visa program and insurance coverage and you may be required to immediately leave the USA. You will be required to return to your country of residence on the earliest available flight. Without prejudice to any other claims IENA may have, you will be responsible for any costs associated with you leaving camp early, including but not limited to flight change fees, other transportation fees, accommodation expenses, food, and meals… You will be liable for any fees that would otherwise be paid by camp to IENA on your behalf (up to $1,650).”
If you do not complete your contract, your visa program and insurance may end and you may need to leave the U.S. immediately. For First Time Placement Program participants, there may be a penalty fee of up to $1,650. This does not apply to Returner Program participants.
2. Speaking with IENA
You are required to contact IENA before you leave camp property. Please give us a call and an IENA representative will explain your next steps.
- You will be paid through your final day of work.
- Camp will help you access the internet/phone to book your US departure flight and will provide transportation off camp to a local bus or train station.
- You will be responsible for any travel costs related to leaving early (flight change fees, transportation, accommodation, meals, etc.).
3. Leaving the United States
Staff who leave camp early typically depart the U.S. within 24–48 hours of leaving camp. The 30-day grace period only applies to participants who successfully complete their program, so it may not apply if you leave early.
4. Leaving camp
In many cases, staff who depart early will need to pack their belongings and leave camp shortly afterward, often without saying goodbye to friends or campers. We understand this can be a stressful moment, but IENA will stay in contact with you and support you through the process.
5. Emergency funds
As part of the BridgeUSA program, all participants must have access to emergency funds during the summer (personal savings, credit card, or support from family). This is important in case unexpected travel or other expenses arise.
Final thoughts
We know this isn’t the most fun topic, and the vast majority of you will never experience this situation. We’re sharing this information to manage expectations around the early departure process.
We truly believe in your ability to succeed and make a positive impact this summer. Whether you’re working directly with campers or supporting camp behind the scenes, you are making a difference — for the campers and for yourself.
We can’t wait to see the amazing experiences you’ll have at camp!
