Some of our participants take international trips during their US program. We hear from students interested in going to Europe, Costa Rica, and elsewhere. We understand that traveling from the US may be an easier pathway to these destinations than from our exchange visitors’ home countries. However, the intent of the Exchange Visitor Program is to explore the culture, history, and people of the US.
Don’t underestimate the possibilities! The US is huge, with countless travel opportunities. Most Americans have only seen a fraction of their country.
Each state has its own unique attractions. This link will connect you to all 50 states’ official tourism websites, where you can review suggestions and guides.
IENA staff is on hand for questions and suggestions about this as well.
If you do decide to travel to countries OTHER than Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands, IENA MUST sign/authorize your Form DS-2019 for travel. Please contact us at least two weeks before your trip to make arrangements to sign your original DS-2019.
Remember that if you leave the US at the end of your program during the 30 day grace period, you will not be re-admitted to the US on your J-1 visa.
