Read about Colombia

“I spent approximately five months working with the International YMCA in Colombia. I taught English to students of all ages and skill levels. From designing art projects for elementary school students to analyzing North American pop songs with high school students to simulating political debates with university students, teaching English in Colombia was one of the most challenging and exciting experiences of my life. I also found teaching enormously gratifying; I knew I was helping children, adolescents, and young adults gain skills that would be beneficial for them in the future. In addition to teaching, I also helped to organize and direct recreational English language camps for youth in various cities across Colombia. Travelling to these camps allowed me to witness firsthand the incredible physical beauty of Colombia and the fascinating cultural diversity that exists within the country. At the camps, we swam, canoed, hiked, danced, sang, played sports, and even built a giant obstacle course! However, the most valuable aspect of my experience in Colombia was the people I met and the lifelong friendships I gained. The staff at the International YMCA was extremely outgoing, supportive, and generous. The people I met through my job welcomed me with open arms, invited me into their homes, introduced me to their families and friends, took me out dancing, and overall made my time in Colombia unforgettable. I have already gone back to Colombia once to visit them, and I plan to go again as soon as I can.” J.B.
“This has been a tremendous opportunity for me to work and live in another country. I highly recommend this to others who are willing to broaden their work and life experience. The best advice I could give to someone interested in this opportunity is to be open and flexible. I had no expectations and was open to any possibilities of where I would be working and staying, and for how long. Because of that mindset that I employed, I was able to fully enjoy and appreciate my situation in Bogota. I am very happy that I was given this opportunity and I am thankful to the YMCA and all those involved for making this happen. This is a wonderful experience and I encourage everybody to come see the real Colombia, get to know the culture and the people, and truly understand what the YMCA is all about. It’s more than just fitness and gym memberships. It’s about teaching the tools needed to improve the lives of those who are less fortunate. It’s about caring for and uplifting communities. It really is about Transforming Lives for the better.” A.E. A.
“When I arrived in Bogotá, Colombia I was nervous to say the least. It was my first time traveling abroad without my father, I was responsible for my younger sister, and I spoke no Spanish. Alveiro, the Director of the YMCA of Colombia, would soon relieve that eternal tension. After he picked my sister and me up at the airport. He took us to a place to eat, where he bought us dinner, and than to our beds. He made my sister and me feel like we belonged in Colombia the very minute we exited El Dorado, the International Airport. Over the course of the next month the YMCA of Colombia not only gave me the experience of a lifetime as a volunteer (I traveled to four different departments in four very different regions of Colombia in the one month I was there!) but it help forge strong friendships that I will have for the rest of my life. I discovered a variety of culture, dance, colorful people, wonderful food and beautiful scenery. I honestly believe Colombia is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I can’t think better people to help share this amazing place with an equally amazing experience. Coming to Colombia was the best decision of my life. Thank you to the YMCA of Colombia for opportunity to be part of your lovely organization.” T.A.
